WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE The movie Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak is a story about a naughty boy named Max. He was ignored by his sister and got scolded by his mother. Because of these,  he left home and later found himself sailing towards an island where he would later meet wild creatures. He later became the king of those wild things because of his (max’s) claim that he is powerful and that he already successfully ruled a kingdom for about 20 years. The wild things believed that he could be the answer to their problems because he have a magical superpower that could solve their problems. He promised them many great things and he was able to convinced them not to kill him, in turn they even made him their king. Max later encouraged everyone to move to an open space where they would build a fortress for them (the wild creatures). KW then brought her friends Bob and Terry which in turn made Carol upset because he wants the fortress to be only for them an...

Peanuts For Your Thoughts

Image
Peanuts For Your Thoughts UP students like us have our campus literally located just a few steps away from SM City Baguio. Thus, chances are, we've already passed T.M. Kalaw Street a hundred times. The narrow sidewalk on this street serves as the main avenue for mall-goers from the east side of the mall. This path is usually quiet and clean, with the sound and smoke of passing vehicles as the only things to regard. That's until we reach the near end of the sidewalk, just before going uphill towards the mall where an elderly woman sells her peanuts from a sack. Anyone heading to SM City Baguio through this route would most likely expect this vendor. It is as if she's already a part of that road, and as unremarkable as parts can be, some people tend to ignore her. She’s just sitting there, eagerly waiting for mall-goers to buy her peanuts. Sometimes, while walking along the way and seeing her, we couldn't help but wonder why, at her age, she still does this. Rain ...

The Narrative Paradigm

What are the main principles/points of the narrative paradigm? In a nutshell, Narrative Paradigm says that people are naturally story tellers and that their lives were seen as "the" story. It looks at messages as narratives and these narratives were compelling for our attention. For a narrative to be compelling it is said to have:1) coherence where narrative must be presented in a sequence just like a story that follows a beginning, a middle and an end.2) Fidelity looks for the truthfulness of the story. For example, you will most likely to believe the person who narrates that he was bitten by a dog than a person who narrated that he bit a dog.

From Trolls, to Yellowtards and Biased Media; An analysis of Message Design Logic (MDL) of Davao VM Paolo Duterte’s sexist comments to Journalist Karen Davila

Image
INTRODUCTION In a nutshell, Message Design Logic is a communication theory which argues that people have their own way of creating messages. To simply put it, MDL categorizes people depending on how they communicate in order to achieve their goals. The message that we create are intended to accomplish specific objectives. For example, if a baby is hungry he tends to cry. The crying (message) baby aims to inform other people, specifically his parents that he is hungry (intention). By learning the MDL of O' Keefe we will be able to analyse the comment section of the NEWS 5 Facebook post about the comment of Vice Mayor Duterte to Journalist Karen Davila. MDL says that there are three types of message design logics . (1) Expressive, in which self-expression is the chief function , and affective and idiosyncratic principles connect messages to the context (O’Keefe and Lambert, 1989) . We communicate in order to express our feeling, thoughts...

Communication Traditions

Image
INTRODUCTION According to Robert Craig, Communication involves talking and listening, writing and reading, performing and witnessing or move generally doing anything that involves messages in any medium or situation. The world of communication was later divided by Craig into seven different traditions, namely, rhetorical, cybernetics, semiotics, socio-psychological, phenomenological, critical and socio-cultural. The Rhetorical Tradition from google images Rhetorical tradition talks about how rhetoric (arts of persuasion) changes through time. Basically, this tradition talks about the evolution of the style and the way of deliberation of speeches from public speaking in the public sphere to public speaking in the “digital sphere”. v   Critique ·          Rhetoric as a “swindlers act” Kant argues that rhetoric is nothing but a swindlers act because rhetoric does not follow any rules. A rhetorician will...
